4 Key Elements
The four mainstays of digital marketing are search, social, mobile, and e-mail. Content marketing and blogging are the fuel that drives the four mainstays, so for our basic overview, we treat them as subsets.
93% of all web traffic is driven by search. Probably the most misunderstood digital market term is Search Engine Marketing (SEM). It’s often used interchangeably with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and or pay-per-click (PPP). It is neither. SEM is the net effect of both organic search (SEO) and paid search (PPP), as both affect how and where you appear for certain keywords. For more detail, see our SEO/SEM infographic.
Social includes both paid social (PPP) advertising and social posting. Both are important to drive interaction. The degree of importance depending on your over digital and social marketing strategy. We go into social marketing in more detail in a separate infographic.
Finally, e-mail. E-mail has been around the longest of all the digital marketing tools. One might think that since it’s the oldest, it would be the least effective. It’s not. According to a survey of digital marketers, it rated highest in its effectiveness.
