Digital marketing has become one of the best ways small businesses can communicate with clients and customers. But how can you take advantage of it?
Digital marketing is constantly changing for small businesses. The ways that people buy products and businesses sell products changes frequently, and we have to adapt frequently to keep up. To help, I’ve gathered three tips about digital marketing that any small business can learn from. Whether you’re just starting out or if you’ve been working digitally for years, these are reminders that you might want to know.
This question might seem redundant, but it deserves an answer. According to Hubspot writer Lucy Alexander in an article titled “The Who, What, Why, & How of Digital Marketing,” Digital marketing is defined as: “all marketing efforts that use an electronic device or the internet.”
That is a very broad definition. But when you think about everything you can do online, you’ll realize that this definition covers so many bases. Whether we’re talking about social media or Google ads or content marketing or email campaigns or even voice communication, we are talking about digital marketing. In 2020 that definition gets even broader as we think about how fast the internet continues to grow.
Social media marketing is incredibly widespread at this point. No matter what app you’re scrolling through, you’re constantly being advertised towards. So how can you take advantage of that?
For one, consider taking advantage of trends online. Similar to how a small business can use guerrilla marketing, clever digital marketing can often be a great way to reach a wide audience cheaply. Social media is a great way to reach out to audiences of all kinds in their day to day lives. Also, consider how COVID has made so many people go online in 2020, meaning that you might find customers in their day-to-day lives.
An article about the origins and basics of social media marketing from WordStream can provide even more information. For example, maintaining a constant brand image and understanding the kinds of links that people are looking for from your business is incredibly important. Similarly, you can better see what competitors are doing when you’re using social media. As WordStream explains, you can find social media success in nearly any field, so long as you have the capabilities to make an impact on that platform. Their site has tips on different types of social media and branding opportunities.
Dom Nicastro at CMS Wire wrote an article last year about the challenges with real-time marketing, and I think it’s as timely as ever. If anything, the concepts of real-time marketing and dealing with direct communication to clients is even more important today. If you can manage to communicate in real-time and build content that is up to the moment, you’ll likely find you have an edge over your competition.
The most important thing is to remain smart about what makes people like your brand in the first place. But there are ways to communicate with audiences’ needs very successfully in real-time. A.I., social media, blog posts, and more are all important for this.
